Eurocode 8 seism actions

Seismic actions are classified as accidental actions. They are determined using a linear elastic calculation model. The designer chooses between a dissipative behavior (which makes it possible to dissipate the energy introduced in the form of plastic deformations) and a non-dissipative behavior of the structure using a behavior coefficient q. The greater the behavior coefficient q, the more the seismic action decreases, but in return the more it is necessary to put in place particular constructive arrangements to dissipate the energy (controlled weakening of certain sections, geometric limitations, geometric relationship between the elements , bolted joint design requirements, fabrication requirements, ...). Seisms effects on buildings

Calculation of the design acceleration

  • Reference peak ground acceleration on type A ground
    agR (National Annex / Legislation)
depending of the place of construction
  • Importance factor
    γI (EN 1998-1 § 4.2.5 / Legislation)
depending of the use of construction
  • Soil factor
    S (EN 1998-1 § 3.2.2.2 / Legislation)
depending of the stratigraphic profile of the ground ρ
  • Design peak ground acceleration on soil
    agS (EN 1998-1 § 3.2.2.2)
  • Design spectrum for elastic analysis
    Sd (EN 1998-1 § 3.2.2.5) / Legislation)
  • Vibration period of the building
    T (EN 1998-1 § 4.3.3.2.2)
depending of height and stiffness of the building
  • Behaviour factor
    q (EN 1998-1)
depending of the structural design concept
  • Acceleration of the building
Sd(T) depending of vibration period of the building and structural behaviour
